Alternative dispute resolution offers consumers the opportunity to turn to independent bodies to assist them in resolving or seeking guidance on disputes before taking legal action in the courts. Generally, the procedure works as follows: customers request the intervention of an impartial third party who acts as a mediator between them and the trader against whom the complaint is made. This mediator may suggest a solution to the complaint, impose a resolution on both parties, or facilitate an agreement between them.

This concept of alternative dispute resolution may also be known by other names, such as mediation, conciliation, arbitration or a specialised consumer disputes committee.
